End-Of-Summer AC Maintenance

August is nearly over, and for families in Elgin, that means it’s back-to-school time once again. It also means that the end of summer will soon be here, and at G&R Heating and Air, we want to make sure that you and your family are comfortable throughout the remainder of the season. When it comes to your air conditioning unit, you may still need to use it well into September, but when it’s time to shut it off, there are a few things that are worth remembering.

If you need heating and cooling services, then please don’t hesitate to contact our team right away. We know that schedules can be busy during this time of year, and we’ll help you find a time that works for you!

Check The Outdoor Unit

Your air conditioner has been running all summer, with its only breaks coming during the night or when that occasional cool day pops up in the forecast. With so much time spent cooling your house, the outdoor unit could use a good visual and internal inspection.

External Maintenance

First, check to make sure that nothing has grown too close to the central outdoor unit. Grass and bushes can all obstruct the unit if they get too close, and the last thing you want is for a hanging tree branch to fall on the unit. Cutting things back can help you prepare for the fall, and you shouldn’t have to worry about anything encroaching on the unit once next spring arrives.

You can also clean the outside of the unit with water or a broom, removing dirt and debris from the coils. This can help the unit work more efficiently, but if you feel that a more thorough cleaning is in order, it’s often best to call a professional HVAC provider.

Internal Maintenance

You may be able to identify some of the internal components of your air conditioning unit, but you may not be comfortable with repairing or replacing them. If you see any loose connections, frayed wires, or other problem areas, then make a note of it and call for service. You may also see where animals such as squirrels or mice have found their way into the unit, leaving behind droppings or chewing on wires. If that’s the case, then it’s best to call in a pest control expert and have them assess the situation.

Our HVAC technician can also listen to your unit as it runs, taking note of any strange sounds or odd noises. They can also inspect the internal components while the casing is removed, looking for proper operation throughout the system. If they notice anything, they’ll be sure to speak with you before beginning any repair work.

Replacing Your AC Unit

As the end of summer approaches, you may be thinking about replacing your old AC unit. You’ve gotten another summer out of it, but now could be the perfect time to install a new system. We can help you choose the right option for your home, and we’ll get it in place before the year grows much older. Next April or May, when the temperatures begin to rise, you can turn on your new air conditioner and enjoy a cool, comfortable home.
