Annual Tune-Up

The first thing to do this fall, before the cold weather arrives, is to schedule your annual furnace tune-up. The heat has been off since March or April, and it’s important to have the system checked before you turn it on for the season. With our Clean & Check service, you can rest assured that every inch of your furnace has been inspected and tested for proper functionality, and that any faulty parts have been noted. We can replace those broken components, and will always let you know what repairs are needed, if any, during your annual tune-up.

Replace Your Thermostat

You might be someone who sets the thermostat at the beginning of the season and then rarely touches it for months on end. However, if you’re the opposite and you adjust the thermostat daily, then it might be worth it to invest in a smart or learning thermostat. Constantly changing the temperature settings can cause your furnace to work harder than it needs to, and with a new thermostat, the system will learn when it needs to run and when it can shut off. With a WiFi-enabled model, you can access your thermostat from your phone to see what the temperature inside the house is before you arrive home from work. Also, if you forget to turn the heat down before you leave for the holidays, you won’t have to turn around and go back!

Ensure Proper Airflow

As your furnace is running during the fall and winter, you’ll want to make sure that there’s proper airflow in each room. Warm air is pumped through your home via the vents, and the returns carry it back to your HVAC system. If the vents and returns are blocked in any way, then your furnace may start working harder in order to achieve the desired temperature from the thermostat settings. You may also want to have your ductwork checked to make sure there are no blockages or leaks that are affecting airflow.

Responsible Usage

While an annual clean and check can help prolong the lifespan of your furnace, so can responsible usage. It can be nice to have a house that’s at 78 degrees all winter long, but it could be more responsible to keep the thermostat at 75 or 76 degrees. You’ll also want to make sure the furnace isn’t running all the time when you’re at work during the day or while you’re gone for the weekend. For even more energy-efficient heating, remember that you can reverse the direction of your ceiling fans, making them turn clockwise, which will pull air up towards the ceiling and force the warm air down and out towards the walls.
