1. What Temperature Should I Set The AC At While I’m Gone?
This question is often asked of both those who work outside the home during the week, as well those who take a summer vacation every year. There’s really no need for your AC to run while you’re not home, but you still want the house to be kept at a comfortable temperature.
While you’re at work during the day, set the thermostat a bit higher so that the AC will only turn on if the house reaches that temperature. If you have a programmable or smart thermostat, then you set a schedule for when you want the air to turn on and when it needs to shut off.
For those going on vacation during the summer, it can make sense to turn the thermostat up even higher for the days you’re going to be gone. Seven to 10 degrees is often a good place to start, and if you close the blinds and curtains, you can keep that afternoon sun from heating up the house too much.
2. When Do I Need To Replace My Air Conditioner?
This is a question we get quite often, mostly from homeowners who aren’t sure how old their central air conditioning unit is. If you moved into a house a few years ago, the previous owners may have told you when the AC unit was installed. If not, you could be left guessing as to how much longer the unit will last.
A well-maintained air conditioner can last between 10 to 15 years. If the unit is older than that, then it’s likely more cost-effective to replace it than try to find replacement parts for it. If it has a low Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) rating, or it still uses R 22 Freon (which has been phased out by the federal government), then you should replace your AC sooner rather than later.
3. What Should I Do If I Find Something Wrong With My AC?
There are all types of problems that can affect your air conditioner, from refrigerant leaks to condenser coil issues to drainage blockages. If you notice anything wrong with your AC, then it’s imperative to call a certified HVAC provider right away. You can turn off the unit by changing the settings on your thermostat, and it’s best to leave it off until a technician can arrive.
If your AC has suffered damage from a broken tree branch or other hazard, then it’s important to assess the damage and call the appropriate service providers. You might be able to remove the branch safely, but you should never investigate the inside of your air conditioner without the proper tools or training.
